Canoeing on the River Wye

In September 2015 myself and three others took a little trip down to Ross-on-wye to stay in some camping arks for the England Vs Wales rugby world cup game. Myself being the only English person between us with those results on the boarder of England and Wales you can only imagine how the nights out went...haha.

A couple of days before we visited one of them decided to book a canoeing trip with 'Monmouth canoe and activity centre'. I was a little worried to say the least as I had no idea what to expect, but I was happy to be doing something fun and adventurous.

When we arrived we were given a brief along with video imagery and a rough guided map of the route we were taking and where the rapids were and other landmarks along the way (including a pub stop)
Our booking name was called first and we were pushed out into the river. This was nicely organised as the majority of our group were children and families, which meant we felt almost alone along the river as you can see in the photos below. We were very lucky to have so much open space to ourselves.

Our chosen route was Monmouth to Whitebrook and we decided to take the optional pit stop at the pub as we seemed to be miles ahead of anyone else but what we didn't realise was that getting to the pub meant climbing up a steep muddy embankment with only a rope to pull ourselves up. haha! My ankle and body strength was still weak at this point after only walking from July without aid but i made it too the top with a lot of help from the others and we treated ourselves to crisps and a pint! haha

At the ending point of this particular route you are helped onto land in an orderly manner and everything is packed away for you whilst you wait for the others. Then back on the mini bus to the centre.

It's a very organised and fun activity and I would definitely recommend this to anybody at any age, as  you can let the river take it's course without paddling too excessively. There are longer and shorter routes i believe but this one took us the best part of half a day. We were lucky to have such beautiful weather at this time of the year but the views were incredible and we seen a lot of wildlife along the route.
In total it cost £35 between two, which I think is a great deal. You can find more into and routes by clicking here
